As silly as that question may sound to some people, I understand why others may want to ask that question. In fact, I think at one point in time, all of us have secretly asked that question within ourselves, mainly because we know that serving Jesus was the right thing to do whether we enjoyed or not.
One of the popular quotes of Jesus is “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10b). Some believe that, in this passage, Jesus is only referring to our lives in heaven. I completely disagree. Here, I believe Jesus is talking about abundance in our ENTIRE life – starting at the moment we accept Him as Lord and Savior. This is actually supported throughout the Bible, but I believe one Scripture really drives the point:
"I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much IN THIS PRESENT AGE (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. (Mark 10:29-30 NIV)
While it is true we will experience persecutions, Jesus promises that whatever we sacrificed for His and the gospel’s sake will be returned to us 100 fold while we are in this age, not the next. True believers of Christ make many sacrifices for Christ, most often, from the moment of conversion. I know in my personal life, I’ve made many sacrifices to follow Christ, many of which I now count as small when I think of the greater gain—Jesus!
Jesus wants us to have a full life in Him while we are here on earth. The fact that the Holy Spirit produces fruit in us such as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” also supports that an abundant life on earth is what Jesus wants for us. The more we yield to the Spirit, the more these fruits will manifest in our lives; the more these fruits are manifested, the more abundant our lives will be.
Jesus has already told us He’s come to give us an abundant life; however, much like everything else in the Kingdom of God, it’s up to us to receive it. My advice to you? Receive it immediately. Why? Well, have you ever worked a job that you absolutely hated or had no joy in working? How long did you last at that job? Usually the answer is not long. In addition to this, you have an adversary who’s primary objective is to make you miserable so you can end your walk with Christ. It’s an age-old objective; however, due to its enormity, this objective has not changed. “The thief (devil) cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I (Jesus) am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
How do you receive the abundant life Jesus has given you?
